Different ways of writing a name |
Another problem that researchers encounter is that names are presented in several ways. This is a problem with the original printed copies of the London Gazette, not just the On-Line version.
For an example, we return to Major Heffernan. His name can be found in various editions of the London Gazette in different forms:
Temporary Second
Lieutenant G. Heffer- man Temporary Lieutenant J. G. P. Heffernan T./Maj. James Gerald Patrick Heffernan |
This is just one of these things we have to live with, and you need to experiment by searching for an officer or soldier using different styles and combinations of his name.
