WW1 (1914-18)
The following items are
just some of those which are available to me:
- Medal
Index Cards and Medal Rolls for the Army, which is effectively an alphabetical
index of all British Army personnel who served overseas in WW1
- Service Records
for officers and men of the Royal Navy and Army
- Battalion War Diaries
- Rolls of Honour
- Army Lists with brief details of nearly every officer
in the British Army
- Regimental and
Battalion Histories
- Original printed
registers for all Commonwealth War Graves and Memorials
- Locations, photographs
and brief details of most war cemeteries and memorials in France
and Flanders
- Locations of
Territorial Force Units at the start of the War
- Locations of
Hospitals and Casualty Clearing Stations
- Chronology of
WW1. (What happened on a specific day)
- Dates, locations
and official names of all the battles of WW1
- Orders of Battle
of the Divisions. (Where a division fought, what units made up
the division, and a brief history of the division)
- Atlas of WW1
showing movements of troops, locations of bombing raids and airfields,
disposition of naval forces and sea battles - eg Dogger Bank
and the Battle of Heligoland Bight
- Details of all
ships which served in the Royal Navy, or were lost during the
war
- NCOs and Airmen
of the RFC who enlisted prior to the start of WW1. (Career details
and some photos)
- Description
of all aircraft operated by the flying services
The names of the
regiments can get rather confusing, and I have made a list
of the Regiments and Corps which existed in WW1. This gives the correct titles,
and shows them in the acknowledged Order of Precedence.
Uniforms of soldiers
can reveal many clues about when the photograph was taken, the
regiment the soldier belonged to, and his rank or appointment.
I have scanned a group photograph of WW1soldiers and have annotated it
to show how this information can be obtained from small details
which otherwise might be missed.
